Most major U.S. airlines stopped accepting ESAs in the cabin in January 2021 after the DOT rule change. ESAs are now generally treated as pets for air travel and must comply with each airline’s standard pet-cabin policy (carrier, fee, size limits) or fly cargo. A handful of airlines still accept ESAs case-by-case — confirm directly with your specific airline before booking out of ORD (Chicago O’Hare International) or any other IL airport.
